In the wake of this, Sprite has Sersi take her powers away so she can finally grow up. When he fails, he takes a cue from another of his mythical counterparts and flies into the sun. However, while Peter gets over himself and allows Wendy and the boys to leave Neverland, Ikaris actively prevents the Eternals from stopping the Emergence. Their tortured existential dilemma gives them villainous dimensions. Both Peter and Ikaris are ageless beings stuck in love triangles, and they're also much darker than their heroic reputations suggest. Tinker Bell and Sprite are the only ones who still stand by their conflicted leader out of their love for him in both stories. His ability to hurt and kill his fellow Eternals, such as Ajak, also syncs up with Peter's need to cull the Lost Boys when they get a little too big or unruly. Ajak's death, in particular, feels eerily appropriate for a character compared to " The Boy Who Hated Mothers." Sersi turning the other Eternals against Ikaris even echoes Wendy convincing all the Lost Boys to abandon Peter and come to London, Sersi's adopted home in the film. Ikaris is the same because he hates himself for the Eternals' mission and avoids confronting how close at hand the Emergence is.
Freidman and Allison Kavy speculate that Hook and the Crocodile symbolize the twin forces of death and time which Peter hates the most. Ikaris' cinematic counterpart might actually be closer to Barrie's lost boy than his comics version. More recent adaptations have seized on these darker traits, though, and Eternals is no exception. One thing led to another and that character developed into the fearsome Captain Hook, who incidentally still had to do celebrity impressions during the play's original run. Peter became a more heroic character in order to fight him, even though Barrie retained some of his meaner aspects in his novelization. This original idea was less action-packed than the famous version, with Wendy talking Peter into allowing her and her brothers to go home. However, Barrie needed someone to do the incredibly specific 1904 task of celebrity impressions to cover scene changes on stage.

RELATED: Eternals Star Spotlights Sprite's Humanity & Teases Her MCU Future Role Barrie's first few passes at the script featured Peter as the villain who kidnapped children to take to Neverland. It makes sense when one realizes Peter Pan interacted with dead children just as much as lost children in his first appearance in Barrie's 1902 book, The Little White Bird. However, the original version of the play tells a different story. Of course, Peter Pan is typically depicted as a hero. However, mentioning Peter Pan serves as a clue towards the villainous turn Ikaris and Sprite take at the film's climax. The film version may have flipped their gender and assigned them the role of Tinker Bell, but it kept the distinctive red hair and green outfit from the comics that recalls Peter Pan's iconic Disney design. Connecting them makes sense, as the film shows the Eternals inspired many of humanity's greatest heroes and myths. Yes, "he," because in the comics, Sprite was an Eternal who seemed to be a boy for all time until the character changed in response to the film. In Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr.'s 2006 Eternals miniseries, Sprite revealed he had inspired the character when he appeared to Peter Pan creator J. That connection has been noticed before and even made canon in the comics.
